Care of cashmere

Cashmere is a noble, luxurious material that requires special care. First, we recommend not wearing sweaters more than two or three times in a row, so they can rest. Because cashmere is a material that likes water, the more you wash it, the softer and silkier it will become. Some cashmere garments should not be washed like others, so please check care labels on each piece.

Washing cashmere in the machine

Contrary to popular opinion, machine washing is actually the ideal way of caring for your cashmere sweaters.

However, it’s important to be aware of a few things to avoid any bad surprises :

  • Always use small doses of special wool detergent, and always avoid fabric softener.
  • Your washing machine must have a low temperature (20° C max.) wool cycle.
  • Always set the spin cycle to a maximum of 500 rotations per minute (rpm) - NEVER FASTER. Also separate light colors from darker ones. Wash your cashmere separately from your other clothes. Never put them in the dryer.

Dry your cashmere flat on a towel, respecting their original shape. Don’t put them near a heat source and don’t leave them out in the sun. Finally, they may be ironed if needed: iron inside out on a low temperature with a little steam. A little steam will gently release any wrinkles from your cashmere.

Hand washing

You may also wash cashmere by hand in cold water, using a small amount of special wool detergent or even some mild baby shampoo. Wash in a small amount of water, without ever soaking. Simply press on it to get rid of excess moisture and rinse in fresh water. Finally, gently wring out any moisture using a towel, and dry flat.

Always follow these steps :

Before washing :

  • Be sure to separate light colors from darker ones.
  • Get some special wool detergent or a mild baby shampoo.
  • Have a cold basin of cold water to hand.
  • Lay your cashmere to dry flat on a clean towel.

Washing :

cashmere detergent. You must never use fabric softener in your wash as it could make the cashmere felt and alter its quality.
Dip cashmere garments one at a time in soapy water, pressing the fabric with the tips of your fingers, and being careful not to wring or rub it. Do not let them soak. You can then rinse your cashmere out without twisting or tugging on the knit. It’s also important not to rinse it under running water. Instead, gently press the water out of your sweater. You can also roll it up in a towel, pressing gently to avoid damaging the fibers. The towel will absorb any excess water.

Drying and ironing

Dry your cashmere flat on a towel, respecting the garment’s original shape. Don’t put them near a heat source and don’t leave them out in the sun. Drying a cashmere sweater can take up to three days. Finally, sweaters may be ironed if needed: iron inside out on a low temperature with a little steam. A little steam will gently release any wrinkles from your cashmere.

Everyday care of cashmere

Pilling and snags :

Cashmere is a natural living material that always contains excess material, leading to the formation of bobbles. A simple remedy to avoid pilling: wash your cashmere regularly to nourish the fibers. Mongolians say that “cashmere loves water: the more you wash it, the more beautiful it becomes.” Bobbles are not a sign of inferior quality; they are a natural phenomenon caused by rubbing. We recommend using a natural stone or comb specially designed for this purpose, which you can find in Kujten shops or haberdasheries. This will keep your garments looking fresh. Each Kujten knit comes with a few extra threads so you can repair any snags; or ask an alterer to do so for you.

Stains :

Treat any stains immediately with cold water and a special cashmere (or wool) stain remover. Follow instructions on the bottle and then wash as indicated above. If the stain persists, take it to the dry-cleaners and ask for delicate dry-cleaning.

Moths :

Cashmere is a real treat for moths, who feed from its fibers. Here are a few tips to prevent this from happening :

  • Only put away clothes that have been washed,
  • Regularly open your closets to air them out,
  • Store any cashmere sweaters that you won’t be wearing over the summer in airtight, zippered covers along with a natural repellant (lavender, cedar wood...).

Storage :

Only store clean, dry cashmere. Ideally, put your cashmere garments in a special box along with a cedar ball or a lavender sachet (natural moth repellants). If you won’t be wearing your cashmere over a long period (for example, if you put your winter sweaters away over the summer), we recommend putting them in an airtight zippered cover.

Our tips :

Don’t wear your sweater two days in a row so the cashmere fibers can rest. Wash your cashmere after wearing it two or three times. Cashmere is a natural fiber that loves water: the more you wash it, the softer and silkier it will become. Before washing, always remove any bobbles
